Buyer Guide
How to Hire an Aircon Technician in Malaysia — Service, Wash, Gas Top-Up Guide
Aircond yang tak sejuk boleh disebabkan oleh banyak benda — gas leak, kompresor lemah, evaporator kotor, atau cuma filter penuh debu. Picking the right aircon technician means picking someone who diagnoses honestly before quoting, not someone who immediately upsells a chemical wash you may not need. This guide covers what to ask, typical Malaysian service prices, and the red flags to walk away from.
What to look for
- Lists service types separately: normal wash (RM 60–90/unit), chemical wash (RM 150–250/unit), gas top-up, leak detection, full installation.
- Brands they're comfortable with — Daikin, Panasonic, Samsung, York, Hisense, etc. — matters for warranty-sensitive units.
- Has photos of completed work showing the indoor unit clean and reassembled (not just promo stock images).
- Mentions whether they bring their own water source or need access to a tap on-site.
- Service area covers your district, not just your state.
Questions to ask the seller on WhatsApp
- Is my aircon problem solvable with a normal wash, or do I actually need a chemical wash?
- If it's a gas leak, will you find and fix the leak first, or just top up gas?
- What's the workmanship warranty? (Industry norm: 30–90 days on labour.)
- How many units can you do in one visit, and is there a multi-unit discount?
- Do you provide a service report / receipt?
Red flags — walk away from these
- Insists on chemical wash without inspecting the unit — many "not cold" complaints are solvable with a normal wash + filter clean.
- Quotes a flat "top-up gas RMxxx" without asking about the leak source. Topping up gas without fixing a leak just delays the next call.
- Won't give a service report, won't let you watch the work being done, or rushes you to pay before reassembly.
- Asks for a deposit via personal account before showing up.
Rough Malaysian price guidance
Rough Malaysian price ranges (2026): normal service / wash RM 60–90 per unit, chemical wash RM 150–250 per unit, gas top-up R32 RM 150–250 / R410 RM 200–350, leak detection + repair RM 200–500, full new installation (1HP) RM 250–450 (excluding the unit). Klang Valley + JB tend to be 10–20% cheaper than outstation due to higher technician density.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I service my aircon in Malaysia?
Every 3–6 months for a daily-use bedroom or living room unit, every 6–12 months for occasional-use units. Malaysia's humidity and dust mean filters and coils accumulate gunk faster than in temperate climates. Skipping service raises your TNB bill (a dirty unit consumes 10–20% more electricity) and shortens compressor life.
What's the difference between normal wash and chemical wash?
Normal wash is a surface clean with water + mild detergent on the indoor unit's filter, fan blades, and front cover. Chemical wash dismantles the indoor unit further (sometimes the evaporator coil) and uses a chemical solution to dissolve mould, biofilm, and stubborn grime. Most yearly maintenance only needs normal wash. Chemical wash makes sense if you smell mould, see black gunk, or it's been over 18 months without service.
My aircon isn't cold. Is it always a gas issue?
No — and beware technicians who jump to "need top-up gas" without checking. Common causes: dirty filter, choked condenser (outdoor unit), stuck blower fan, faulty thermistor, or — yes — a gas leak. A good technician runs through these in order. Topping up gas on a system that has a leak just delays the next service call by 2–4 weeks; the leak must be found and fixed.
