Buyer Guide
How to Hire a Home Tuition Tutor in Malaysia (UPSR, PT3, SPM, IGCSE) — 2026 Parent Guide
Picking a tutor for your child is not the same as picking a plumber — the work compounds over months and the wrong fit costs more than money, it costs the kid's confidence in the subject. The good news: you don't need to commit to a full term to find out if a tutor works. A 1-hour trial class on WhatsApp video or at home tells you most of what you need. Here's what to look for, what to ask the tutor, and the red flags every Malaysian parent should know.
What to look for
- Lists the syllabus they teach — KSSR, KSSM, IGCSE, A-Levels, Cambridge primary, Matrikulasi. "All syllabuses" is a soft warning sign — the syllabuses are different.
- Specifies year/level (e.g. Form 4–5 SPM Add Maths, Year 6 UPSR Math). A tutor strong in SPM Physics may not be the right fit for Year 3 Sains.
- Offers a trial class — most LokalGig tutors do, often free or at half rate. Decline the booking if they refuse a trial.
- Has visible results or testimonials — past students' grade improvements, names of schools they've taught at, or written parent testimonials.
- Clear on format — at your home, at the tutor's home, online (Zoom / Google Meet / WhatsApp video), or hybrid. Travel time changes the effective hourly rate.
Questions to ask the seller on WhatsApp
- Which syllabus do you teach for [Form 5 / Year 6 / Year 11], and what's your typical pace? Can you adapt to my child's school's term plan?
- Do you offer a trial class? If yes, free or charged? What do you cover in it?
- How do you measure progress — written assessments, past-year papers, weekly reports, or just verbal feedback?
- What's your rate per hour for [in-person at my home / your home / online]? Travel surcharge if applicable?
- If we sign up for a term, what's your refund / pause policy if my child can't continue?
Red flags — walk away from these
- Demands full term payment upfront before the first class. Pay session-by-session, or weekly, until trust is built.
- Refuses to do a trial class — every honest tutor agrees a trial is fair to both sides.
- Promises specific grades ("guaranteed A in SPM"). No tutor can guarantee a grade; results depend on the student's effort.
- Vague about which syllabus they teach. KSSM, KSSR, IGCSE, and Cambridge are different — a tutor who can't articulate the difference probably teaches one and dabbles in others.
- Asks to teach in a non-standard location (their car, a hotel, an unfamiliar address) for a child. Always at your home, the tutor's verified home address, a public study space, or online.
Rough Malaysian price guidance
Rough Malaysian rates (2026, per hour): primary subjects (Year 1–6) RM 30–60; PT3 subjects RM 40–80; SPM subjects RM 50–100; SPM Add Maths / Physics / Chemistry / Bio RM 60–120; STPM / Matrikulasi RM 80–150; IGCSE / A-Levels RM 80–180. Klang Valley premium adds 10–25%; experienced ex-school teachers and current MOE teachers (after hours) sit higher in each band. Online classes are usually 10–20% cheaper than in-person at your home.
Frequently asked questions
How much does home tuition cost per hour in Malaysia in 2026?
Roughly RM 30–180 per hour depending on level and subject. Primary school sits at RM 30–60, PT3 at RM 40–80, SPM core subjects at RM 50–100, SPM Add Maths / Physics / Chemistry / Bio at RM 60–120, and IGCSE / A-Levels / STPM at RM 80–180. Klang Valley adds a 10–25% premium. Online classes typically run 10–20% cheaper than in-person.
Online tuition vs. tutor coming to my house — which is better?
Depends on the child and the subject. In-person works better for primary school kids (focus, accountability), for subjects with handwritten working (Maths, Add Maths, Chemistry equations), and for kids who get distracted by screens. Online works better for older students (Form 4 onwards), for theory-heavy subjects (Sejarah, BI essays, Bio), when the best tutor is far from your home, and for tighter budgets. Many Malaysian parents do hybrid — in-person weekly, with online catch-up sessions before exams.
Should I pay the tutor by the hour, by the month, or by the term?
Pay session-by-session or weekly for the first 2–4 weeks while you're checking fit. After that, monthly is the most common arrangement and many tutors offer a small discount (5–10%) for monthly upfront. Avoid paying a full term (3–4 months) upfront until you've worked with the tutor for at least a month — refunds are awkward and Malaysia has no platform-side escrow on private tuition.
Are LokalGig tutors verified or qualified?
Tutor backgrounds vary — some are current or retired MOE teachers, some are top-scoring SPM / STPM graduates teaching part-time, some are full-time tutors with years of track record. LokalGig doesn't gate listings behind formal certification, so verification is on you: ask for their teaching background, school they taught at or graduated from, and a few past-parent testimonials. Always run a 1-hour trial before committing to a term.
